Ask a Cowboy Poet
August 2021
This month the poets try their best to give a lesson in love poetry to a lonesome wrangler out of Lovelock. It’s an age old art that many can attest is hard to master, but with a little help from our friends here we have plenty of faith that this cowpoke can pull it off. We hope it sparks some inspiration in all of you. Have a question you want to ask the poets? Email us and we will put it up to the pros.
“
Dear Cowboy Poets,
I'm currently dealing with a long distance relationship scenario, and I was thinking a good way to bridge the gap was with some good, old-fashioned love poetry. Do you have any favorites that you'd recommend sending to a loved one? Or any tips for trying to write some of my own? Thanks for the help! ”

Dick Gibford:
Love poems are not within my field of expertise. Yet if you could write a poem of your own and send it, I would think that could possibly help. The poem doesn’t have to be perfect, just throw a little rhyme in there once in a while. The main thing is the content of the poem. I don’t have a lot of experience with long term relationships myself, but have had long distance love affairs, because I have lived my life mostly in cow camps where its been 30 to 75 miles to where the women were, all I can say is I wish you the best of luck.
Yvonne Hollenbeck:
Dear Lovesick in Lovelock,
I have little knowledge regarding love poems, as Cowboy poetry, which I write, rarely touches on such a sensitive topic. To convey your true feelings, you should write your own. Google “love poems” and see if you can get ideas from reading what you find.

Just a heartless cowboy poet
Bill Lowman:
I didn't have much to offer in your situation with brief knowledge of it. The best I can do is to send you a couple cowboy poems that I wrote, illustrated and published some years back.
Best of luck,
Cowboy Cupid, Bill Lowman

Found this in a file I’d forgotten I’d written but seemed to come close to your request…
Best Thing About Me
I’m dating above my pay grade
My attributes are few
You have changed my outlook
The best of me is you
You banish worry from me
You’ve always got my back
You sooth my sore frustrations
You’re strong in what I lack
You are the best thing about me
You have the gumption I’ve not
You showed me there is a future
You are the trophy I caught
A life for me wasn’t happ’ning
I lay adrift on my sea
You set my life course to promise
You’re the best thing about me
Friends admire our friendship
We have proud families too
You keep our lives in order
You are my why and who
We listen to each other
Give our best advice when asked
You put at ease my doubting
That we’re up to the task
You are the best thing about me
You have the gumption I’ve not
You showed me there is a future
You are the dream wish I got
Life for me wasn’t happening
I lay adrift on my sea
You set my life course to promise
You’re the best thing about me
