Join us for a tour of the current Wiegand Gallery exhibit, The Western Sights of Jo Mora, led by Jo Mora Trust curator Peter Hiller, collector Joss Grandeau, and historian Griff Durham.
Artist Joseph Jacinto 'Jo' Mora (b. 1876) came to the United States from Uruguay and became enamored with the culture and stories of the American West at an early age. Throughout his lifetime Mora documented the changing landscape of the West in various media, from his signature cartes (illustrated maps) and illustrations to watercolors and bronze sculptures, detailed etchings and stories. In The Western Sights of Jo Mora, the early 20th-century American experience is beautifully brought to life for viewers of all ages and backgrounds. You can read the full exhibition details and more on the artist's background here.
Hiller, Grandeau, and Durham will walk you through the highlights of this engaging exhibit, from the well-known Sweetheart of the Rodeo image (of Byrds’ album cover fame) to lesser-known objects of interest.
Hiller will also be on hand after the tour to sign copies of his book The Life and Times of Jo Mora: Iconic Artist of the American West.
