Marie Smith: February 2010

A native of Western Australia, Marie Smith moved to the United States in 1952 when she married Idaho cowboy and artist, Cecil Alden Smith (1910-1984) from Carey, Idaho. They lived in Nevada, Utah and Montana, and raised seven sons and four daughters, and Marie is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Well known in cowboy poetry circles, Marie's work appeared in many publications, including her own "An Aussie Turned Cowboy Wife" and "North and East of Down Under." She enjoyed performing at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering for many years, as well as the Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering in Ellensburg, Washington, which she helped found. Marie was inducted into the Cowboy Poets of Idaho Hall of Fame, among other honors, and she served on the board of directors for the Academy of Western artists.
