The Western Folklife Center was saddened to hear that Idaho cowboy poet Howard Norskog passed away on January 18, 2013. Howard joined us in Elko for  the 1988, 1990 and 1992 Cowboy Poetry Gatherings, representing the states of Wyoming and Idaho. Born in 1933 in Wyoming and raised in Cody, Howard later moved to Idaho, working with cows and horses all his life.

Howard started writing cowboy poetry and ballads in 1948 and published at least five books. He was awarded the Cowboy Poets of Idaho's Silver Quill award in 1997 a prestigious award based best performance of original material by a member, and was inducted into the Idaho Cowboy Poets Hall of Fame in 1999.
